Usage Note

Ciné is the everyday informal shortening of cinéma. While cinéma is standard in writing and formal speech, ciné is common in spoken French: on va au ciné? (shall we go to the movies?). The full form cinéma also carries the sense of drama or fuss: faire tout un cinéma = to make a scene.
