cimetière

cemetery, graveyard

Usage Note

Cimetière is masculine. La Toussaint (All Saints' Day, 1 November) is the traditional day in France when families visit cemeteries to place chrysanthemums on graves — so chrysanthemums are associated with mourning in French culture. Cimetière marin is also the title of a famous poem by Paul Valéry.
