Usage Note
Chiot is the standard word for a puppy (a young dog under about one year old). It is masculine and typically covers both sexes; a female puppy is un chiot femelle. Chiots à donner ('puppies to give away') is a common classified-ad phrase. The adult dog is chien/chienne.
