capot

hood

noun kah-POH Rare

Also means

bonnet

Usage Note

Capot refers to the hinged cover over a car's engine — what British English calls the 'bonnet' and American English the 'hood'. It is also the name for a cover or housing on other machinery. In cards (jeux de cartes), faire capot means to win all tricks, and by extension the expression être capot informally means to be stumped or beaten.

Examples

"Il a ouvert le capot pour vérifier le moteur."

Natural Translation

He opened the hood to check the engine.
