Bruit covers any kind of noise (a loud bang, background noise) as well as an unverified rumour: le bruit court que... ('rumour has it that...'). The final t is silent. The related adjective bruyant means noisy. Sans bruit ('without a sound') is a common literary phrase for silent action.
