volontairement

deliberately, intentionally

adverb voh-lohn-tehr-MAHN Rare

Usage Note

Volontairement emphasises conscious intent and is stronger than exprès (on purpose) in formal contexts. Its opposite is involontairement (unintentionally). The root adjective volontaire can also mean 'strong-willed' as well as 'voluntary', which sometimes causes ambiguity.

Examples

"Il a volontairement omis cette information."

Natural Translation

He deliberately omitted that information.
