vêtir

to clothe, to dress

verb veh-TEER Rare

Usage Note

Vêtir is an irregular, literary verb rarely used in everyday speech, where habiller is strongly preferred. Its past participle vêtu (dressed, clad) is still common in written French: bien vêtu (well-dressed). The noun vêtement (clothing, garment) is the everyday related word learners encounter most.

Examples

"Elle était vêtue d'une robe blanche."

She was clad in a white dress.
