Usage Note
Transcription covers written records of spoken language, musical scores, and phonetic notation. In linguistics, la transcription phonétique uses IPA symbols; in music, a transcription is an arrangement for a different instrument. Related: transcrire (to transcribe), transcript is not used in French — use transcription or relevé instead.
