Trêve refers to a temporary halt to fighting or conflict, and is also used idiomatically: trêve de plaisanteries means 'enough joking around'. The phrase sans trêve means 'without respite' or 'relentlessly'. It is of Frankish origin, from treuwa (agreement, pledge).
