thym

thyme

noun TAN Rare

Origin: Greek 'thymon', via Latin 'thymum'.

Usage Note

Thym is one of the essential herbs of Provençal cooking and the French bouquet garni, alongside laurier (bay) and persil (parsley). The final -m is silent, so it sounds like the nasal vowel in teint. It is a staple of herbes de Provence.

Examples

"Ajoutez du thym et du laurier dans la sauce."

Natural Translation

Add thyme and bay leaf to the sauce.
