taxi

taxi

noun tak-SEE Less Common

Usage Note

Taxi is an invariable masculine noun — the plural is also taxis (no change to the word itself). In Paris, taxis are metered and regulated; prendre un taxi means to take a cab. App-based ride services are called VTC (véhicule de tourisme avec chauffeur). The word is a shortening of taximètre, from taxe (charge).

Examples

"Il a pris un taxi pour aller à l'aéroport."

Natural Translation

He took a taxi to the airport.
