Samedi derives from the Latin sabbati dies ('day of the Sabbath'). In French, days of the week are not capitalised. Le samedi (with the article) means 'on Saturdays' as a habitual action, while samedi alone refers to a specific coming or past Saturday. The weekend in French is le week-end (borrowed) or la fin de semaine (more formal).
