romain (feminine romaine) means relating to ancient or modern Rome: l'Empire romain ('the Roman Empire'), un chiffre romain ('a Roman numeral'). La laitue romaine ('romaine lettuce') takes its name from the same word. Capitalised Romain / Romaine is used as a nationality noun.
