Usage Note
Roi is famously associated with the phrase le Roi-Soleil, the nickname of Louis XIV. On Epiphany (Twelfth Night), French people eat la galette des rois — a flaky pastry with a hidden figurine, and whoever finds it wears a paper crown as king. The feminine counterpart is the separate noun reine (queen), not a feminine form built from roi.
