Usage Note

Resto is the everyday colloquial shortening of restaurant — perfectly normal in casual conversation and even in printed guides. Resto U (short for restaurant universitaire) is the standard term for a university cafeteria in France. Using restaurant in informal speech is not wrong but can sound slightly stiff.
