Ressentir specifically refers to feeling emotions or physical sensations internally, distinguishing it from sentir (to smell, to feel in a sensory way) or se sentir (to feel oneself to be in a state). You say ressentir de la joie (to feel joy) or ressentir une douleur (to feel a pain). The noun ressentiment means 'resentment', a related but narrower concept.
