Remettre is a compound of re- + mettre and carries the idea of returning something to a state or person: remettre un document (to hand over a document), remettre en place (to put back in place), remettre à plus tard (to postpone). Se remettre de means 'to recover from' (se remettre d'une maladie = to recover from an illness).
