rejaillir

to splash back

verb ruh-zhah-EER Rare

Also means

to rebound

Usage Note

Rejaillir literally means for a liquid to spurt or splash back, but it is very commonly used figuratively: le scandale rejaillit sur toute l'équipe means the scandal rubbed off on the whole team. The figurative use (spreading of blame or glory) is arguably more frequent than the literal one in modern French.

Examples

"L'eau a rejailli sur son manteau."

Natural Translation

The water splashed back onto his coat.
