Usage Note

Reconquérir follows the irregular conjugation of conquérir (je reconquiers, il reconquiert, nous reconquérons). It is used both literally for recapturing territory and figuratively for regaining trust, freedom, or popularity. The noun reconquête (reconquest) is its close companion; la Reconquista is the historical term for the Iberian reconquest.
