Usage Note
Rat is identical in spelling to English but the final 't' is silent in French. Calling someone un rat (or quel rat!) means they are a cheapskate, a common informal use. The feminine form is une rate, and a baby rat is un raton.
Examples
"Un rat traverse la rue."
Natural Translation
A rat crosses the street.
