Règne covers both a monarch's period of rule and the biological kingdoms of nature: le règne animal ('the animal kingdom'), le règne végétal ('the plant kingdom'). The related verb régner means 'to reign' or 'to prevail'. Note the grave accent on règne becomes an acute accent in régner.
