Usage Note

Pénible covers physical pain (une blessure pénible), a tedious task, or, very commonly in colloquial speech, a person who is insufferable or a real drag. The same form is used for masculine and feminine. C'est pénible! can mean both 'That's painful!' and 'What a pain you are!'
