Prodigue is most familiar from l'enfant prodigue ('the prodigal son'), the biblical parable. It describes someone extravagantly generous or wasteful. The same form is used for both masculine and feminine. The related verb prodiguer means 'to lavish' or 'to bestow generously' — prodiguer des soins ('to lavish care').
