pressentiment

premonition, foreboding

noun preh-sahn-tee-MAHN Rare

Usage Note

Pressentiment describes a vague, intuitive sense that something is about to happen — typically negative. Avoir le pressentiment que means to have a feeling that. The verb is pressentir (to have a premonition about). It is more literary and formal than l'intuition, and always carries a sense of the not-yet-confirmed.

Examples

"Elle avait un étrange pressentiment ce matin."
