pourtant

yet, however, nevertheless

adverb poor-TAHN Less Common

Usage Note

Pourtant introduces a contrast or concession, similar to 'yet' or 'and yet' in English: c'est simple, pourtant il se trompe ('it's simple, yet he gets it wrong'). It often carries a note of surprise or mild reproach. It is more colloquial than the more formal cependant or toutefois.

Examples

"C'est difficile, pourtant il réussit."

Natural Translation

It's difficult, yet he succeeds.
