Poireau is a staple of French cuisine, used in vichyssoise, poireaux vinaigrette, and pot-au-feu. The plural follows the -eau → -eaux rule: poireaux. Colloquially, faire le poireau means 'to be left waiting' (literally 'to stand there like a leek').
