Usage Note

Piquette originally denoted a thin, sour wine made by adding water to pressed grape skins. Today it is used colloquially and dismissively for any low-quality wine — c'est de la piquette means 'it's rubbish (wine)'. By extension, prendre une piquette means 'to get thrashed' (in a game or contest), a colourful figurative use.
