Usage Note

persuader is followed by de + infinitive — je l'ai persuadée de rester ('I persuaded her to stay'). It implies appealing to someone's reasoning or emotions. Convaincre is a close synonym but more often implies a logical argument. The reflexive se persuader means to convince oneself.
