partition

score (music)

noun pahr-tee-SYOHN Rare

Origin: Latin partitio

Also means

partition (division)

Usage Note

Partition most commonly means a musical score in French — the full written music (la partition d'orchestre). Its political/geographical sense ('division') is also active, as in la partition de l'Inde ('the partition of India'). Do not confuse with English 'partition' in the computing sense; for a disk partition French uses partition as well, but the dominant everyday meaning is the musical one.

Examples

"Le pianiste a oublié sa partition avant le concert."

Natural Translation

The pianist forgot his score before the concert.
