oublier

to forget

verb oo-blee-EH Common

Usage Note

Oublier carries the everyday warning n'oublie pas, the French 'don't forget', while the reflexive s'oublier means to lose track of oneself or, delicately, to have an accident. It is the natural opposite of se souvenir, and j'ai oublié is the universal excuse for a missed appointment.

Examples

"J'ai oublié mes clés."

Natural Translation

I forgot my keys.
