Usage Note

Oiseau has an irregular plural oiseaux, following the common French pattern of nouns ending in -eau → -eaux. The expression à vol d'oiseau means 'as the crow flies' (literally 'at bird's flight'). Oiseau is also used in the informal expression drôle d'oiseau (odd bird, quirky person).
