Usage Note
Monnaie covers both a country's currency (la monnaie unique) and physical coins or small change (rendre la monnaie = 'give change'). It differs from argent ('money' in general) and billet ('banknote'). Petite monnaie means loose change; fausse monnaie means counterfeit currency.
