Mi-chemin is almost always used in the fixed phrase à mi-chemin, meaning 'halfway' or 'midway'. It can be used spatially (à mi-chemin entre Paris et Lyon) or metaphorically (à mi-chemin entre deux idées). The mi- prefix, meaning 'half', appears in many French compound words.
