Usage Note
Marmite is a heavy lidded pot used for slow-cooking soups and stews; it gives its name to the British yeast extract brand Marmite (from the French word). The phrase faire bouillir la marmite means 'to bring home the bacon' (literally 'to keep the pot boiling'). A petite marmite is a classic French broth served in a small individual pot.
