marinade

marinade

noun mah-ree-NAD Rare

Usage Note

Marinade is the liquid mixture — typically containing oil, acid (wine or vinegar), and aromatics — in which meat or fish is soaked before cooking. The related verb is mariner (to marinate), and mariné is the past participle used as an adjective (harengs marinés = pickled herrings). Do not confuse with marmelade, which is a fruit preserve.

Examples

"Laisse la viande dans la marinade une nuit."

Natural Translation

Leave the meat in the marinade overnight.
