marguerite

daisy

noun mar-guh-REET Rare

Usage Note

Marguerite is both the common daisy flower and a traditional French given name. The classic children's game of pulling petals — 'il m'aime, il ne m'aime pas' ('he loves me, he loves me not') — is always performed with a marguerite. The word comes from the Greek for 'pearl'.

Examples

"Elle a cueilli une marguerite dans le pré."
