lézard

lizard

noun leh-ZAR Rare

Usage Note

Lézard is the common word for any small lizard; the final d is silent. The verb lézarder (to laze in the sun) is derived from lizards' sun-basking habit — lézarder au soleil means to bask lazily. Lézard also appears in faire le lézard, a colloquial expression for lounging about doing nothing.

Examples

"Un lézard se réchauffe sur le mur."

Natural Translation

A lizard is warming itself on the wall.
