Légionnaire can refer to a soldier of the French Foreign Legion (Légion étrangère) or, historically, a Roman legionnaire. It is also the informal name for a recipient of the Légion d'honneur, France's highest state decoration. La maladie du légionnaire (Legionnaires' disease) is named after an outbreak at an American Legion convention.
