liston

strake, rail (nautical strip)

noun lees-TOHN Rare

Usage Note

liston is a nautical term for a protective strip running along the outside of a hull, above the waterline, shielding it from knocks when mooring. It is a low-frequency specialist word that rarely appears outside maritime or boat-building contexts. On boats it often sits at the hull-deck join, the most exposed part of the hull.

Examples

"Le liston protège la coque du bateau."

Natural Translation

The strake protects the boat's hull.
