Usage Note

Liberté is one of the three words on the French national motto — Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité — making it culturally central. It can mean personal freedom (liberté de parole, freedom of speech) or the state of being free (rendre la liberté à quelqu'un, to set someone free). The adjective libre and the verb libérer share the same root.
