Lame refers to the blade of a knife or sword, but also to a thin flat strip of material — une lame de parquet ('a floorboard plank'). Une lame de fond ('a ground swell') is the nautical and figurative expression for a powerful underlying force. Not to be confused with the masculine le lama (the animal).
