indien

Indian (person)

noun adjective an-DYEHN Less Common

Usage Note

Indien can refer to a person from India or, in older/North American usage, a Native American — the latter use (Indien d'Amérique) is now considered outdated in careful French, replaced by Autochtone or Amérindien. As an adjective it means 'Indian' or 'of Indian origin.' The feminine form is indienne.

Examples

"Mon ami indien prépare un curry."

Natural Translation

My Indian friend is making a curry.
