Usage Note
Hypnotiser is used literally (a hypnotist hypnotises a subject) and very commonly in a figurative sense meaning to mesmerise or transfix: le feu l'hypnotisait (the fire mesmerised him). The related noun hypnose (hypnosis) and hypnotiseur (hypnotist) round out the word family. In everyday speech, être hypnotisé par something means to be completely absorbed by it.
Examples
