Usage Note

Huitième is both an ordinal adjective (le huitième étage — the eighth floor) and a noun (un huitième — one eighth). It begins with an aspirate 'h', so there is no elision: one says le huitième, not l'huitième. In sports, les huitièmes de finale are the round of 16.
