hindou

Hindu

noun adjective een-DOO Rare

Origin: Persian Hindu, from Sindhu (the Indus river)

Also means

Hindu person

Usage Note

Hindou refers to a follower of Hinduism or to something relating to that religion or culture; it should not be confused with indien (Indian, from India). Unlike nationalities, names of religious adherents stay lowercase, so a Hindu person is un hindou, not capitalised. The feminine form is hindoue.
