Usage Note

Hamac came into French via Spanish hamaca from a Taino word of the Caribbean. The final c is pronounced. It is a common item in French gardens and on holiday: se balancer dans un hamac ('to swing in a hammock'). In naval French, le hamac was historically the sailor's sleeping hammock on warships.
