guerre

war

noun GAIR Common

Usage Note

Guerre gave English the word 'guerrilla' via Spanish, from the diminutive meaning 'little war'. In French, la Première Guerre mondiale and la Deuxième Guerre mondiale are the standard terms for the two World Wars. The expression partir en guerre contre (to go to war against) is used figuratively for fierce opposition to anything.

Examples

"La guerre a duré plusieurs années."

Natural Translation

The war lasted several years.
