Usage Note

Grive names several species of the thrush family, notably the grive musicienne (song thrush). There is a well-known French proverb: faute de grives, on mange des merles — 'beggars can't be choosers' (literally, 'for lack of thrushes, one eats blackbirds'). Thrushes are considered a game bird in parts of France.
