garrot

tourniquet

noun gah-ROH Rare

Also means

withers (of a horse)

Usage Note

Garrot has two main senses: in first aid, a tourniquet used to stop severe bleeding; and in equine anatomy, the withers (the highest point of a horse's back, used to measure a horse's height). A third, rarer historical meaning is the garrote (instrument of strangulation). Learners are most likely to encounter the tourniquet sense in medical or emergency contexts.
