Usage Note
Fraternité is the third word of the French Republic's motto Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité, enshrined in the Constitution. Beyond politics, it describes a bond of solidarity among people — un esprit de fraternité ('a spirit of brotherhood'). The adjective fraternel ('brotherly') and the verb fraterniser ('to fraternize') derive from the same root.
